What about ?
> The planet and the beauty of the landscapeAnimal species
> Human activity = scientific innovation, pollution, deforestation, city life
> Natural disasters = storms, hurricanes, floods, melting of ice

It is a video narrated by science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov who popularizes science through his books. The video shows pictures of our planet. It shows how beautiful and precious animal species and landscapes are. It seems to praise the beauty of nature and warn us against the dangers of pollution, scientific innovation (progress), city life and deforestation. Human beings have been polluting the planet and they have been destroying nature. They have been shaping the landscape to build cities. But they have provoked disorder and natural disasters. The video shows pictures of storms (hurricanes / tornadoes), floods, tsunamis. It also seems to warn people against the dangers of global warming and the melting of ice on the poles.

What about the world today ?
> So fragile
> We can’t subject the earth to the torture we have inflicted upon it

Human activity ?
> We are piling more and more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
> We are chopping down the lungs of the earth at great rate
> Life and death problems go to the roots of the viability of the planet itself making the earth a lot less livable

Isaac Asimov explains that the world has become so fragile that we shouldn’t subject the earth to the torture we have inflicted upon it. We ought to stop destroying the planet because we have been piling more and more carbon dioxide. We have been polluting more and more. We have been chopping down the lungs of the planet at a great rate because of massive deforestation. We have made the earth a lot less viable.

Problem ?
> Ocean
> Pollution
> Atmosphere
> Over-population
> We are facing problems that transcend nations
> Greenhouse gases affect the entire planet

Solution to the problem ?
> All human beings are facing the same problem
> It is important that we face the problems together as a unit
> The only way we can solve the problem is by human collaborative solution

All human beings are facing the same problem and we ought to face the problem together. We ought to find collaborative solutions. We have been polluting oceans, the atmosphere. We have been destroying the planet. We are facing problems that transcend nations.

Saving the planet ?
> The human species is one species
> Who is going to fight and to lead in the direction
> Miracle don’t happen
> Sweat, efforts, thoughtsIt is up to us to help

The human species ought to act collaboratively. Human beings ought to cooperate (to collaborate / to combine) to solve the problem because we are one species. We ought to fight in the same direction. Isaac Asimov thinks that miracle don’t happen and that change requires commitment (involvement), action, efforts and sweat. He thinks it is up to everyone to help. It is everyone’s responsibility.

Part 1 :  (début > 01:54 min)
Happiness ?
> Cash in the bank, fancy car, a big house, being popular don’t equate to happiness

Success ?
> There is a concept of what happiness and success look like
> A good life is defined by having the latest phones, laptops, fashion and an aesthetic décor at home
> Fame and material possession don’t equate to happiness
> Our life is surrounded by superficial things
> Cash in the bank, earning money, having a fancy car or a big house doesn’t make people happy.
> Being successful and popular doesn’t make people happier because fame and material possession don’t equate to happiness.
> It is superficial.
> We should not focus on superficial things in our life but we should focus on the essential things.
> A good life is defined by having material possession but it is a lie to make people consume more and more.

Part 2 : (01:54 > 2:37 min)
Definition of materialism ?
> Materialism draws out the societal norm of a good fulfilling life
> Living with less to make room for more
> Identifying the essential
> Letting go of the rest

We should live with less to make room for more in our lives. We should identify the essential and we should get rid of what is superficial.

Part 3 : (1:13 min > fin)
10 kea steps to minimalism ?
> Step 1 : Identifying essentials
> Step 2 : A packing party to let go of what you won’t use
> Step 3 : Having a minimalist approach to new technologies and minimize the time using new technologies mindlessly
> Step 4 : Money doesn’t buy better habits = improve your life by healthy financial habits and relationships
> Step 5 : Declutter your mental clutter and remove yourself from people who affect your life negatively
> Step 6 : Focus on real priorities and think what you would like your priorities to be
> Step 7 : Health is a vehicle not a destination = simple diet and exercise routine
> Step 8 : Grow meaningful relationships = quality over quantity
> Step 9 : Course correction = don’t make the same mistakes to move forward
> Step 10 : Life is an acquired taste so get rid of the excess

We should identify essentials. We should make a packing party to pack what we don’t use and we should let go of what we don’t use. We should also have a minimalist approach to new technologies and minimize time using new technologies mindlessly. We should improve our life by healthy financial habits because money doesn’t buy happiness. We should open our mind and remove negative people from our life. We should focus on real priorities and reorganize our priorities. We should take care of our health by having a healthy diet. We should practice exercise. We should not make the same mistakes twice if we want to move forward. So we should correct our mistakes. We should get rid of the excess to improve our life.

STEP 2 :

Part 1 :  (début > 00:26 min)
Consequence of consumerism ?
> We spend so much time on the hunt
> We get wrapped up in the huntIt makes us miserable
> Black Friday shopping is crazy

People spend a lot of time shopping. They are used to being on the hunt. They are used to consuming a lot. They are used to buying (are used to purchasing) new items all the time. They are wrapped up (are trapped / are tricked) by the consumer-society. Consumption makes people miserable and crazy. For Black Friday, people get wild (savage).  They become crazy (insane / mad). They lose their mind.

Part 2 : (00:26 > 1:13 min)
Info about materialism ?
> We as a culture have lost our minds
> The American Dream has increased tremendously in material terms
> It has been sold to us for more than 100 years by those who want to make a lot of money

The consumer society makes people lose their mind because they are manipulated (are brainwashed) by advertising. People think achieving (fulfilling) the American Dream means acquiring material things. Consumerism has been sold to people for more than 100 years by profit-seekers. Consumerism sustains the economy.

Consequence ?
> We are obsessed with new items
> People realize that they have been tricked
> You are not going to get happier by consuming more

People are obsessed with getting new products. They are obsessed by fashion. But they realize that they have been tricked (have been manipulated) by the system because consuming more doesn’t make them happier. Materialism is not the kea to happiness.

Part 3 : (1:13 min > fin)
What they think about minimalism ? There is nothing wrong with consumption but the problem is compulsory consumptionWe are tired of acquiring things because that’s what we are supposed to doIt was not just about getting rid of stuffs but it was about taking control of one’s life and stop being told what to do   The main problem is compulsory consumption because people buy more and more. People are brainwashed into buying more and more. That’s why minimalists want to take control of their life. Minimalism is a way to protect oneself from the consumer-society.

Changes in their life ?
> He reduced things in his life and found out that he had 51 things in his life
> She sold 90% of her stuff
> She moved stuff and realized what she had sacrificed
> This thing that doesn’t make us happy is also causing the degradation of our habitat
> Minimalism is a way of thinking that stopped the madnessWhen you recognize that this life is yours then everything changes

When people recognize that this is their life and that mass-consumption is causing the degradation (destruction) of the planet, they understand that they should stop buying. They realize that they should get rid of material possessions to feel happy. Selling things that they have or reducing things in their life makes people happier.

Text Collapsology

Collapsology, can we avoid a catastrophe ?

Sara de maio, online blog, 15may 2015, Biodiversity

Collapsology

For many years now I have been fascinated by theories about the future of our globalized world. Among other things, dystopian film-like events and Jared Diamond’s book (Collapse, 2005) make me keep wondering of possible scenarios – what could possibly happen to our civilization? I am not the only one to worry about it; the scientific community is more concerned than ever by the unsustainability of human activities.

The Boiling Frog

As per the allegory, our planet is the pot and we are the frog. We have been gradually exposed to dangerous changes that we keep minimizing or simply ignoring. Extreme climate events, season’s deregulation, air-soil-water pollution, extinction of terrestrial and aquatic animals, slow food-poisoning, pandemics, have become banal. Our current level of consciousness is disproportionately inferior to the seriousness of the situation.
If we continue to believe that we are laying in a comfy jacuzzi, hey earthlings, we will boil up.

‘The Limits to Growth’

Economic growth based on limited non-renewable resources is a bet meant to be lost. The remaining non-renewable resources are plummeting turning into harmful waste and pollution (i.e. entropy), while population and consumption continue to grow exponentially. Without significant interventions, a period of global decline is expected: food per capita, industrial output per capita, services per capita, would all drop. This would negatively impact the global population beginning with 2030.

Unlocking resources

But wait… Imagine a circular green economy based on ecology, knowledge and continuous innovation….

(Imagine the missing part of the text).

All of these would be part of our best future scenario –When I think about collapsology, either lamblike fear, activist fever or fatalist curiosity grabs me. Safe environment and sustainable resource management are still not a priority for the world’s decision-makers. Humanity pushes its limits farther towards self-destruction and hopefully self-salvation. Maybe that is what our damned species is about.

STEP 3 : Recopie dans ton cahier en respectant le code couleur la proposition de trace écrite. (Rouge pour les structures)

Part 1 : Collapsology
Future ?
> Dystopic future
> End of civilization
> Unsustainability of human activities

The unsustainability of human activities will lead to a dystopic (nightmarish / hellish / horrible) future. It will provoke the end of civilization.

Part 2 : The boiling frog
Dangers ?
> Extreme climate events
> Seasons’ deregulation
> Air-soil-water pollution
> Extinction of terrestrial and aquatic animals
> Slow food poisoning
> pandemics

Reactions ?
> minimizing
> ignoring
> level of consciousness disproportionately inferior

Consequence ?
> we will boil up

The planet is in danger. In the future there will be more extreme climate events. The seasons will be deregulated. Air, soil and water will be polluted. There will be the extinction of terrestrial and aquatic animals (species). The food will be poisoned because of pollution. There will be epidemics and pandemics that will kill people.

Part 3 : The limits to growth Problems ?
> Economic growth based on limited non-renewable resources
> Harmful waste
> Pollution

Consequences ?
> Global decline of food, services and industrial output per capita
> Negative impact on the population

The fact that economic growth is based on non-renewable resources has been destroying the planet because people don’t recycle. It creates harmful (dangerous / noxious / hazardous) waste and pollution.

Part 4 : Unlocking resources
Le texte a été malencontreusement déchiré, à toi d’imaginer et de ré-écrire la partie manquante.

Imagine a green economy and beneficial innovations ?
> Fair distribution of wealth
> Sustainable technology affordable to everyone
> New systems
> Waste treatments
> Biological, medical and aerospatial discoveries
> Biogaz
> Solar and eolian power feeding energy needs
> Composting to generate food for all

That’s why it is time to imagine a fair distribution of wealth on the planet. Sustainable technologies should be affordable to everyone. We should invent new systems to protect the planet. We should invent a treatment of waste not to pollute. We should use biogas. We should use solar and eolian power to feed energy needs. We should compost to grow food.

They have to survive and they go south because they hope for a better place down south. They dream of some utopic (dream-like) world. Himanity has become carnivorous (cannibalistic) and man is a wolf to man. It is the law of the fittest. Humanity is back to a state of nature and human beings have become survivors on earth because they have destroyed their planet. This is the end of civilization. Cormac Mc Carthy anticipates (foreshadowes / foresees) a dystopic (nightmarish / hellish) future. Men shall have to survive and they shall have to live out of the remains of civilization. He imagines a post-nuclear world and his anticipation novel warns us against the dangers of progress and limitless scientific progress.

STEP 3 : Think about the future…
Unlock the puzzle and find out the coded word that describes our civilization’s future :

NIGHTMARE

Why do you think this word is appropriate to describe our planet’s future ? Explain in your own words.
Human beings’ living conditions have become a nightmare (nightmarish / hellish) because civilization has collapsed. Civilization has gone back to a state of nature. They have to be on the road because civilized places have been destroyed. They have to wander like hobos in the wilderness. The world has become dangerous (hazardous / unsafe / insecure).

Effect of Global warming ?
> Hurricane Sandy flooded memorial 9/11
> Storms hit stronger and more destructive

Hurricane Sandy flooded memorial 9/11. Storms (tornadoes / hurricanes) hit stronger and they are more and more destructive. As a consequence the planet will be destroyed (will be ransacked / will be devastated) by natural disasters.

People’s reaction ?
> People are scared
> Despair is paralyzing

People are scared (afraid / frightened) and panic-stricken. They feel desperate (hopeless / pessimistic) and despair is paralyzing.

Changes and new developments ?
> Tremendous amount of positive change but it is still not enough
> Climate change conference in Paris
> Tough negociations
> Shift to renewables
> Every nation agreed to get to zero greenhouse emissions

There has been a tremendous amount of positive changes. People have changed positively but it is still not enough to save the planet. The climate change conference in Paris agreed to get to zero greehhouse emissions and there were tough negociations to shift to renewable energies. Politicians are aware of climate change and agree on taking action together.
What is right… What people should do…  What is wrong… What they shouldn’t do…
To make their voice heard. To recognize it and not discuss it. To send a message of truth to power. To give hope to the future generation. To fight like our world depends on it.Trump wants to cancel billions in climate change spendings. We couldn’t hear what the scientists were saying. We couldn’t hear what mother nature was screaming.
People should make their voice heard. They think that politicians should recognize it and not discuss it. Trump shouldn’t cancel investments in climate change spendings. We should have heard what the scientists were saying. We should have heard what mother nature was screaming. We should send a message of truth to power. We should fight like our world depends on it because we should give hope to the future generations. Protecting the environment is ethically (morally) right. We should save the planet.

Recopie dans ton cahier en respectant le code couleur la proposition de trace écrite. (Rouge pour les structures)

Problem ?
> 2005 as the hottest year
> we are causing global warming

2005 was the hottest year. It is hotter and hotter. Temperatures have increased because of global warming.

Consequences ?
> Within a decade there will be no more snow
> Temperature increases all over the world
> Stronger storms
> Floods
> Hurricanes
> Faster melting of ice
> Rise of the sea level
> Refugees

Within a decade there will be no more snow. The temperatures will increase all over the world. There will be stronger storms. There will be floods. There will be hurricanes. The ice will melt faster. The sea level will rise. Global warming will cause natural disasters. There will be more and more refugees because of climate change.

What we should do ?
> A political issue
> A moral issue
> We should prepare to face other threats besides terrorists
> We have to act together to solve this global crisis
> Our ability to live is what is at stake

It is a political issue and a moral issue because human beings have betrayed the planet. They have destroyed the planet. We should prepare to face other threats besides terrorists because the planet is in danger. Natural disasters will be more and more dangerous (hazardous). We should protect the planet. We should act together to solve this global crisis because we won’t be able to live in the same way in the future. We should stop mass-consumption and mass-production to save the planet.
